Welcome to Web Chancellor
Web Chancellor is a Content Management System that lets you easily manage and update your website as well as add powerful functionality to any website. There are two ways that you can use Web Chancellor. You can use it to create a new website or you can use it to convert your existing website. If you use it to convert your existing website, then you can usually maintain the look and feel of your existing website. The following are a few of Web Chancellor's features: 1. Multi-Language Capable:
Web Chancellor is multi-language capable, meaning you can load two or more languages simultaneously, so that visitors to your website are presented with a convenient pull down menu (usually located at the top right hand side of the page), in which they can easily switch from one language to another (View a live website where this feature is currently being used). Web Chancellor comes "off the shelf" ready to accomodate two languages. More can be added by contacting a Web Chancellor representative.
2. Comprehensive Publication System:
Web Chancellor contains powerful publication software that enables users to easily put their publications on line as well as provide virtually instant subscriber accounts to individuals, pretty much at the click of a button (View a live website where this feature is currently being used). The publications module comes with full search and sorting capability, multiple authors, the capability to easily setup publication groups (or "series"), the ability to instantly convert publications to PDF documents, instant publication mail-to-a-friend forms, and more. Adding a publication to your website is as easy as cutting and pasting a document into a form. Your publication will appear fully formatted on your website on the date that you indicate, and will also be automatically mailed out to your distribution list on the date specified. We have much more to say about our publications module, which we are sure you are going to want to find out about. Ask us for details, as this is one of our biggest and most comprehensive modules that, in our opinion, rivals even "the best of the best".
3. CNN Style Slide-Shows
Add a "CNN Style" slide show to your website that will have your visitors wondering whether or not it took you or a professional developer numerous hours to assemble. Our easy to use slide down / photo tour utility means that putting together a comprehensive slide show, complete with captions, can be accomplished in just minutes. Our slide show utility enables you to include entire image directories into your slide show, making it a real breeze to put together. The slide show automatically resizes to the largest slide present. Easy to use. No non-sense. You'll be using this utility over and over again. (View a live website where this feature is currently being used)
4. Ultra Spam-Free Guestbook
Spam is a big problem on the internet, so we've designed our guestbook to be ultra spam free. You won't get any spam either submitted to your guestbook, or appearing on your website - period. First, comments submitted to your guestbook get sent directly to you in an email. Second, you are given the option to either approve or reject the guestbook posting. Note that in order to even submit the comment to you, the user must input a 4-digit security code, which spamming robots cannot recognize. So the comment you will be receiving must have been sent by a live person to begin with. With the easy to use approval process, approving or rejecting the comment is as easy as clicking a link. There. You're done. The comment is now posted on your website.
5. Comprehensive Events calendar
Our events calendar is both professional and easy to use. For example, easily load in weekly meetings by setting a start date, stop date, and then submitting the form, so that each specified day (eg Saturday) is registered for the entire year at the click of a single button. Then, go back and remove the few days where the meeting will not be happening. Events can be set to appear individually (show-cased, one event per page), or in list format. Also supported is an events calendar that shows events listed within a calendar itself, which can be scrolled back and forth. Events can be instantly converted to convenient PDF format, or mailed to a friend. When used in conjunction with the user accounts module, an event reminder service can be easily setup, by which individuals can easily sign up to receive email reminders for the particular event. 6. Random Image Rotation
A common feature these days is the "random" image effect, which gathers an image from a pool of images, so that the image changes in one particular location on the website whenever a link is clicked (this is not to be confused with the very annoying effect of having images rotate in front of you "advertizing banner style" even when you have not clicked on a link). In this way, visitors to your website will be presented with a "pool" of images which they can see, as opposed to the "same old static image" always appearing in that one location on your website. If you've used the web at all, you've probably seen this on numerous websites. The Web Chancellor system provides for a very easy means of achieving this desired effect. Simply load the pool of images into any directory, then apply the "random" image formatting tag in that one location that you want the image to randomly be rotated in. (View a live website where this feature is currently being used (click on any link several times to see the images rotating on each click))
7. Automated User Accounts
User accounts are a feature of many websites these days. Users accounts can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Web Chancellor user accounts are both secure and fully automated. Individuals simply visit your website, fill in a form, and submit the form. They will then be sent an email in which they must click on a link in order to confirm that they want to be added to your mailing list. This is called a "double opt-in" method and guarantees that people cannot sign up others without their permission. This is a safeguard for you, in that it protects you from being shut down by monitoring services that might otherwise consider your website to be a possible gateway for spam. We've taken every precaution necessary to make sure that the user accounts cannot be abused and that administrators are informed of any account activity at every step of the way. For example, when someone signs up for a new account on your website, you'll be sent an email informing you. As the website administrator, you'll also be informed of any other account activity, including account updates, password resets, account closures, to name a few. All this is fully configurable from your administrative account, so that you can opt to receive as many, or as few, notification messages as you wish, informing of you what is happening on your website in real time. User accounts are also fully configurable, allowing you to add virtually unlimited mailing lists.
8. Daily Page (or "Tracking") Reports
Some CMSs boast in page counts. We boast in page reports. Page reports are a whole lot different than page counts. Whereas with page counts you'll know how many hits you received on a particular page, with page reports you'll know exactly which IP hit which page, and when. In fact, you can opt to receive a comprehensive list of which pages were visited, broken down by IP address, and the time of the visit, sent to you each day. This is all standard with Web Chancellor. This lets you know who is visiting which page, and in what order. We'll even tell you which country the visitor is from, so you can easily track which pages, or sections of your website, are getting the most hits. Click here to view a tracking report taken from an actual client (but slightly modified)
9. Page Editing & Global Search & Replace
Editing a Web Chancellor web page is very easy. There are two user friendly editors in place, both the FCK Editor as well as the Tiny MCE editor, which make it a real breeze to edit pages, add effects such as underline, bold, colors, font size and family, tables and more, at the click of a button. You can also work directly with the source code, if you want, but most people prefer to stay with the MS Word format WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") editors. In this way, editing a page takes just a minute. Web Chancellor also has numerous additional features which makes editing and adding pages a breeze. For example, our copy page feature allows you to instantly copy an existing page. Time sensitive pages can be set to time out on any given day. You can also do a global search and replace on any key word or string of words. Page links are automatically inserted on the page, can be embedded up to 10 layers deep, and can be reordered, in seconds. Create a new page on our demo website easily, in seconds
10. Full CSS control Like all modern websites, Web Chancellor templates use CSS style sheets. But did you know how easy it is to actually edit those style sheets? With Web Chancellor, you don't even need to view the direct CSS source code. We have created a GUI (graphical user interface) that allows you to easily modify the look and feel of any part of your template, broken down into sections such as side-navigation, top-navigation, lists, tabs and forms. Web Chancellor allows you to save as many independent CSS configurations as you like, and has the ability to easily add images and colors, list bullets, backgrounds, hover images, and to fine tune borders, padding, margins, and more. So changing the look and feel of a Web Chancellor website is something anyone can do, at any hour of the day, and in just about as many ways as you can possibly imagine. Web Chancellor really is easy.
11. Easily Configurable Templates
Some CMSs will allow you to apply a single template to your entire website. Of course, Web Chancellor will allow you to do that. But Web Chancellor goes way beyond that by allowing you to apply any number of templates to your website. You can, for example, apply a single template to your entire website, or you could apply a different template to each section of your website, or you can even apply templates on a 'per page' basis. So the sky is the limit when it comes to adding and manipulating templates. As with our pages section, you can also easily copy templates. However, most users can actually get by with a single template that, to the end user, looks like multiple templates are being used on the website, on account of Web Chancellor formatting tags. More about formatting tags in the next section.
12. Formatting Tags
Web Chancellor has defined a whole host of specialized tags which cause instant functionality to appear on your website. In some cases, these are 'short-cuts' to rather mundane functions, such as inserting a page link into any page. Web Chancellor's "short cut" method of doing that would be to simply add [url,target=new,page=58]click here[/url] (produces -> click here) into any page, which automatically assigns the standard class and rewrites the URL to whatever has been assigned for that page, including adding necessary javascript code, where applicable. Other formatting tags are not-so-mundane. For example, creating the javascroller effect at the top right hand of this page was as easy as inserting [set=dem, type=javascroll] into that part of the page. Thus, some formatting tags invoke a huge amount of code "behind the scenes". The following are a few others**:
Formatting tag | Causes to appear | Example | | [friendly_links] | Friendly links.
| | | [page_title] | Page title.
| Home | | [set=ctc,form=contact] | Contact form.
| | [date,unix-date] | Formatted date*.
| Fri May 9 2008 | | [set=pub,id=current] | Latest publication.
| [click to view] | | [ticker, msg="Some message"] | Ticker message in status window.
|
| | [set=cal,by=date] | List of sorted events.
It doesn't take long to figure out a reason to add a basic lists to your website. Basic lists, in fact, are one of the most common occurrences on websites. For example, a list of recommended sites is a basic list. So is a list of audio messages. Web Chancellor handles lists with as much automation as possible, so that you don't end up manually inserting a list into a page. For example, lists of publications are taken from the database containing all the publications that have been created, and are searchable and sortable. Similarly, lists of publication authors are automatically generated and can be placed on any page by inserting a single formatting tag. Entire lists of audio messages can be made to appear on the page, sorted and searchable, simply by telling the system which directory on your website the audio messages are contained in. From that single directory, the system then creates a searchable and sortable list of audio message to display back to your viewing audience. There are numerous permutations of lists that can easily be created, including lists of calendar events, publications, authors, series, links, audio and video messages, and more.
14. URL Tracking on External URLs & Automatic URL capturing
If the page you are creating contains an external URL, the Web Chancellor system will automatically insert the link to the URL so that you do not have to manually insert it yourself using the HREF tag. Thus, you do not have to write,
please visit <a href="www.ibm.com">www.ibm.com</a>
but rather
please visit ""www.ibm.com""
which will automatically generate
please visit www.ibm.com
The automatic method automatically inserts an external target for the link, so that visitors are not completely taken away from your website. So if you click on the previous link, the current page is not removed from your desktop, but rather a new browser window is opened.
Note that the class for the link has also been automatically assigned, according to the base class for links on the page. Furthermore, if enabled, you can automatically capture the URL into a redirect URL*, which allows the system to record accesses to external URLs, and send you back a tracking report early the next morning, indicating which external URLs were accessed - a very valuable tool for any website administrator which gives you the "full scoop" on who is accessing which URLs on your website at any given time. *In this case, ""http://www.webchancellor.com/s/adj.pl?b=rds&r=http://www.ibm.com"" as happens to be the case. You don't need to worry about this, but we thought you might want to know.
15. Automated, Unlimited, Mailing Lists
Web Chancellor allows you to add mailing lists easily. Mailing lists are tied in to the user accounts module, and so automatically appear on the sign up form from your website, when new users opt to create a new account with you. Some mailing lists do mail-outs automatically, like the publications mailing list. In that case, you simply load the publication into the system, and it appears both posted and is mailed out on the date that you specify. You can also create as many independent mailing lists as you like, in which case doing a mail-out to such a list is handled via the 'Batch mail' utility under the user accounts menu. When doing a mail-out to any mailing list, you can opt to mail-out to those on the list, or those off the list - that's up to you (just select the appropriate switch). Each mail item is sent independently, with the user's email address independently appearing on the "To" line. The Bcc line is terribly frowned upon, as this causes emails to be sent slower, and sometimes results in the email being falsely labelled as "spam" - so the Bcc line is never used, and a mail-out to 5,000 independent user accounts will result in 5,000 independent emails being sent - not one email with 5000 addresses appearing in a "Bcc" field (as some CMSs do, which is an extremely bad practice).
Mail Attachments & Formatting Tags
The Web Chancellor batch mail feature also allows you to easily add one or multiple attachments to your emails, as well as enabling the use of multiple specialized formatting tags within the body of the email itself. One such formatting tag, for example, would allow the recipient of the email to be able to instantly view their account profile, embedded in the email itself. Another formatting tag would provide an instant logon link to the recipient's user account. And yet another formatting tag (the [recipient_fn] tag) will cause the recipient's first name to be inserted into the email. So there are plenty of options, and plenty of versatility, when it comes to handling email via the Web Chancellor system. (We doubt you'll find such specialized features on other systems.)
16. Forms & Surveys Easily add a form or a survey to your website, in minutes. Our forms and surveys creator allows you to add unlimited questions or statements per form, and lets you format that in any way you like, as input boxes, textareas boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, select, or multiple select pull down menus.
17. Files & Images, Uploading & Password Protecting
Easily manage file uploads, image directories, and image thumbnails. Drop a formatting tag into any web page to automatically produce a link to a file, PDF document, flash or regular image. Drag and drop images directly into web pages. Our Files & Images utility displays the dimensions of the image, along with an "optimized rating", to let you know if the image is suitable for the web. Choose between three different thumbnail sizes. Search, sort, upload, and create new directories, to keep your website orderly and properly managed. Easily password protect directories by adding as many userids and corresponding passwords as you like (uses Apache's htaccess method). Click a button to view all the password protected directories at a glance.
18. Error-Handling
Error-handling is handled in as transparent and as comprehensive a manner as possible on the Web Chancellor system. First, it's transparent because information is fed back to Web Chancelllor (where necessary), with minimal effect to, or interaction with, the user. Second, it's comprehensive, in that as much information as is possible is fed back to Web Chancellor. One of the ways that it's transparent is to, on occasion, and were deemed useful, to automatically substitute in the website's home page for a bogus or non-existent URL. There are cases where it's important to let the user know they have input a bad URL. There are others when it's clearly not important and where automatically substituting in the website's home page for the bad or non-existent URL is a much better option, and leaves the end-user with something to view, rather than an error message. Web Chancellor has taken the necessary steps to ensure that, only where necessary, an error message is displayed. In all other cases, the user is brought back to the home page, or the closest page that matches the URL provided. 19. Time Zones
It may seem like there are only a few time zones in the world. In fact, there are 373 (at the time of this writing). Web Chancellor uses the same time zone database that is used in Linux distributions (called the "TZ" database). With the database programmed right into the system, it means that people living in one part of the world can view times and dates posted on the website referenced to their own time zone. This means more relevance for the end user, and relevance means a lot in today's world.
